Jugra (GPS: 2.86335, 101.43976) is a small town in the Kuala Langat District of Selangor, and administered as part of the town of Banting. It is on the eastern bank of Sungai Langat, across from Pulau Carey.

Jugra's call to fame is that it once served as a royal town, and the then monarch, Sultan Abdul Samad, moved his seat of power there in 1875. In fact he had been living there since 1857, prefering Jugra over Kuala Selangor, as he found Jugra to be more peaceful. Interestingly, he called the site in Jugra where he had his palace "Bandar" meaning town, and today, that site is called Kampung Bandar, or "town village". During that time, instead of Kuala Langat District, there was simply Langat. Sultan Abdul Samad built his palace, known as Istana Jugra or Istana Bandar. His mausoleum today commands a strategic position on a hill above the town.

As Jugra was the Selangor power centre during the second half of the 19th century, the British also sited their administration centre in the town. However it soon became apparent that Klang was a better location, and both the royal status and state administration eventually moved there. Today Jugra is a quiet place past its glorious days.

Along Jalan Bukit Jugra is a lake within the grounds of AKIM, the Akedemi Latihan Inovasi dan Motivasi. Further on is small road that leads to the mausoleum of the 19th century Sultan Abdul Samad.

Kampung Bandar

Kampung Bandar is the town centre for Jugra. It is located on the southern bank of Sungai Langat. On this part of Jugra are a few important sights including the Istana Bandar and Sultan Alaeddin Mosque.

The Istana Bandar, also called Istana Alaeddin, was built by Sultan Sir Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah, who was the 5th Sultan of Selangor, reigning from 1898 to 1938. It was officially opened by the monarch in 1905. The palace is today on Jalan Istana Lama.

Further down the same road is the Alaeddin Mosque, constructed from 1903, and was opened by Sultan Alaeddin in 1906. The Alaeddin Mosque was built in the North Sumatran style with elements and influences from the Sultanate of Deli. The prayer hall has a hip roof topped by a roof lantern.

How to go to Jugra

The nearest major town to Jugra is Banting. Follow the directions from the South Klang Valley Expressway, SKVE (E26) to Banting. The main road in Banting is Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad. Do not turn left when the road forms a junction with the other main road, Jalan Alam Shah. Instead, just continue on along Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad and you will arrive in Jugra.
