Restoran Orchard View Yong Tau Foo, Ampang, Selangor (9 July, 2016)


Restoran Orchard View Yong Tau Foo (GPS: 3.14449, 101.76351) is one of the very famous yong tau foo restaurants in Ampang, Selangor. Since my wife and I were in Selangor exploring its sights, we decided to go to Ampang for the yong tau foo as one of the must-have meals of our trip. Since time was tight for us, we proceeded to Ampang in the morning, to have yong tau foo for breakfast.

We had originally planned to visit Restoran Foong Foong, probably the most famous of the Ampang yong tau foo restaurants, but privately, I was hoping to visit a different restaurant, as I have eaten at Restoran Foong Foong. As it turned out, fate helped in our decision making, for we arrived in Ampang so early that Restoran Foong Foong has not begun operations. So we went next door, to Restoran Orchard View, and was the first customer for the day.

During our visit, we told the matriach of the restaurant that we came all the way from Penang to enjoy Ampang yong tau foo. She was delighted, and told us that she in fact was from Penang, but after gotten married, have stayed in Ampang, Selangor, where the family operated the yong tau foo restaurant. We were pleased to be able to speak with someone who spoke Penang Hokkien.

Ordering was pretty straightforward. Just follow the menu, and point out what we wanted. We also ordered the oily vegetables. Turned out our initial order was not enough for us, so we placed a second helping order. Considering we were outstation guests, and having struck up a conversation with the matriach, she gave us a bowl of her gingko barley sweet broth, on the house.

My wife and I enjoyed our breakfast yong tau foo. If you asked me, which yong tau foo is better, Restoran Orchard View or Restoran Foong Foong, I honestly could not tell the difference. As far as I'm concerned, they were equally good. But it's been so many years since I ate at Restoran Foong Foong, while memory of my meal at Restoran Orchard View is still quite fresh. Having said that, I don't mind returning to Restoran Orchard View, or perhaps try out yet another different yong tau foo restaurant the next time we were in Ampang.
