Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary is the oldest wildlife sanctuary in Sarawak. Located in the Kuching Division, it was gazetted in 1979 and covers an area of about 69 square kilometers within the Gunung Pueh Forest Reserve. The wildlife sanctuary stretches from the border with Indonesia to within 2 km of the coast.

Samunsam was made a wildlife sanctuary to protect the habitat of proboscis monkeys that live there. The result is that other wildlife species have also found a sanctuary where they can thrive with limited human contact. The wildlife sanctuary on on a flat, undulating terrain no more than 25 meters above sea level, with the Samunsam River flowing through it.

The soil structure graduates from alluvium along the river to terrace alluvium and loamy sandstone as we move away from the river. The vegetation comprises mangrove near the river, and lowland rainforest farther away. The lowland rainforest within Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary can be further subcategorised as riverine rainforest, tropical health forest or kerangas, and mixed dipterocarp forest.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
