Bukit Tiban National Park, Sarawak

Bukit Tiban National Park (GPS: 3.45808, 113.4979) is a national park in the Miri Division of Sarawak. It covers a 80 square kilometer area at the headwaters of Sungai Nyalau and Sungai Timong in the Miri Division, and Sungai Sigrok in the Bintulu Division. Bukit Tiban, which was made a national park in 2000, acts as a water catchment area for the surrounding region, which comprises plantations as well as residential and industrial areas. It is bordered to the south by the Pan-Borneo Highway at Km-50.

Bukit Tiban is an example of how an ex-logging area has been successfully reforested. Silvicultural treatment was carried out by the Sarawak Forestry Department to bring the area back to the state of a natural forest. Through the reforestation efforts, the wildlife population at Bukit Tiban has increased significantly. As an island of refuge surrounded by palm oil plantations, Bukit Tiban provides a sanctuary for the wildlife that roam into the plantation areas at night to search for food.
