Go BackPulau Balambangan was occupied by Alexander Dalrymple of the British East India Company in 1761 following a treaty with the Sultan of Sulu. This resulted in a free port being established there. It was one of the first locations that the British had set up a base in Sabah. However incessant attacks by pirates prevented the port from becoming a successful trading centre.
