Wat Phodhiyaram Buddhist Temple, Taiping (31 August, 2015)


Wat Phodhiyaram (GPS: 4.85755, 100.72926) is a Thai Buddhist temple in Taiping, Perak. Also called Bodi Langka Ram Buddhist Temple, is located along Jalan Muzaffar Shah in Assam Kumbang.

Wat Phodhiyaram was founded by Kwah Soo, a tin miner from Phuket, with his brother Khor Beng Hong and other relatives, who came to Taiping to work on the tin mines. The temple was built for the use of the Chinese and Thai tin miners whom Kwah Soo brought over from Phuket.

Two monks were invited over to be the residents of the shrine. The monks had with them a Sinhalese boy as helper. They also brought over a young Bodhi tree sapling, which was planted in the grounds of the temple. It has since grown into a big tree.

The British approved the allocation of a 1.2 hectare land for the temple in 1903. Since then Wat Phodhiyaram has received a stream of believers from the Chinese, Thai and Burmese communities in Taiping. The temple usually holds a celebration in conjunction with Wesak Day.
