Sungai Siput (GPS: 4.81936, 101.07593), is a small town in Kuala Kangsar District, Perak. Like several of the towns in the central Perak area, Sungai Siput is famous for producing groundnuts.

The namesake river, Sungai Siput, forms a small valley surrounded by limestone hills within the Kinta Valley area. Tin was mined here in large quantities during the late 19th century. A sort of cable-car system1 was installed to transport the ore from the hills to the plains below.

The village of Sungai Siput is believed to have been established around 1893 to house mostly Chinese tin miners. At the initial stage, there were 75 houses.

In Malaysian politics, Sungai Siput was the stronghold of Dato Seri Sami Vellu, the president of the Malaysian Indian Congress from 1974 until his defeat in the 2008 election by Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj of Parti Socialist Malaysia (PSM) winning under Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
