Batu Gajah Prison

Batu Gajah Prison (GPS: 4.47882, 101.03335) is one of the oldest prisons in Malaysia. Today it is called Pusat Pumulihan Akhlak Batu Gajah, or Batu Gajah Character Rehabilitation Centre.

When it was founded in 1902, the Batu Gajah Prison was called the Kinta Prison. In 1951, it became the Central Women's Prison, when it received its first batch of women prisoners. Then in 1959, the institution was revamped to house those incarcerated under the Emergency Ordinance 1948. This is the precursor to its role as the incarceration centre for those held under the Internal Security Act 1960.

Yet another change was afoot for the prison in 1983, when it was renamed to its present role, and called Pusat Pemulihan Akhlak, for the incarceration of those held under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1985. Under this act, persons may be held for up to 2 years on the orders of the Home Ministry.
