Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight 香雲素食坊 (GPS: 5.45653, 100.30752) is a vegetarian restaurant in Tanjong Tokong, Penang. It is located on the first floor of Vantage Desiran Tanjung (you can see the outlet as you drive along Jalan Tanjong Tokong). This restaurant offers gluten-free vegetarian interpretation of local dishes as well as Western cuisine. Its tagline is "Cook with Heart, Serve with Love", and after trying the food, I wholeheartedly agree. This is the third Xiang Yun outlet to open in Penang, after the ones at Kompleks Lebuh Nipah and I-Avenue.

My wife and I had the pleasure of an invitation to try out the food here on Saturday, 15 April, 2017. Upon arriving, we were warmly greeted by the owner, EK Khor. A meal of vegetarian dishes is not usual for us, as we are usually meat eaters. Nevertheless, we were game to try out the food, and as it turns out, we enjoyed it as much as any meaty meals.

During this visit, we tried the Hainan Chicken Rice (RM7.90), Teowchew Steam (RM8.90), the Bah Kut Teh (RM12.90), the Nasi Lemak (RM7.90), the Stir Fry Yau Mak (RM8.90) and the Indian Claypot Curry (RM16.90). In addition, we also tried a few side dishes, such as the Lor Bak (RM6.90) and the Soy Satay (RM8.90). We had Soursoup Juice (RM8.90) and Passion Fruit Juice (RM8.90) to go with the meal, and afterwards, we ended the meal with a cup of Latte (RM8.90) and a cup of Organic Chocolate (RM9.90).

Of all the items we enjoyed today, the one which I love the most is the Indian Claypot Curry. This is the vegetarian interpretation of the Indian fish curry, except that the fish is made of seaweed and soybean. It is quite spicy, which is just fine with me. I can eat that with rice and I am completely satisfied. Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight has just demonstrated to me that vegetarian food can be as tasty as meaty food, and it doesn't have to be bland. The curry here is as rich as as spicy as any meaty curry. But that's just one dish. There's more items to try.

Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight offers the vegetarian version of the Teowchew Steam, which is a sourish fish soup. Again, the fish is made of seaweed and soybean and is a tasty variation which you can eat without any fear of fishbones. This would make a perfect meal on its own if you add bee hoon or noodles.

Do you know how vegetarian Bah Kut Teh look like? Now I do. It looks like the real thing without the meat! It even has the aroma of Bah Kut Teh.

The Nasi Lemak from Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight showcases the remarkable art of Chinese vegetarians in creating meat-looking items out of soy. I am particularly fascinated by the vegetarian anchovies (which are made from mushroom stems) and the soy-based minced meat. There is also a piece of soy-based seaweed cutlet that represents a piece of fish.

Xiang Yun's Chicken Rice, to be honest, doesn't quite look like actual chicken rice. This vegetarian interpretation has two soyskin items that represent two types of chicken. One is the breaded chicken while the other is roasted chicken cut into pieces. Being soy, they have a crispy texture.

Accompanying the dishes are the juices. I had the Soursop while my wife the Passion Fruit. Both are very refreshing, and come with a big chunk of Soursop as well as the sweet seeds of the Passion Fruit.

In addition to the main dishes, we enjoyed the two side dishes, namely the Soy Satay and the Lor Bak. The Soy Satay doesn't quite look like Chicken Satay (well, at least in my opinion, it doesn't), but it does taste like one. And the beauty of it, is that it feels like very soft chicken meat. They do get the taste of the satay well, though I would prefer the satay sauce to have chunky bits of peanuts.

The Lor Bak (which is listed on the menu as "Five Herbs Vege Roll", referring to the five-spice powder, I suppose) is nicely crispy. Unlike other vegetarian Lor Bak that I have eaten before, it does not use taro as the main ingredient (that would have made it rather soft). There are three main ingredients in the filling, one of which might be difficult to figure out. So what is it made of? Emm, come over to Xiang Yun Vegetarian Delight and try the Lor Bak, and see if you can guess the content.

After our meal, Khor served us with Latte and Organic Chocolate. Both are rich and creamy, and are just the right thing to end this satisfying meal. I have to say that neither my wife nor I could finish all the food, and even with Khor joining us for the meal, there was still leftovers. That's because we tried so many items. We had a wonderful visit, and hope to return in the future, to try other items at Xiang Yun Vegetarian Restaurant.
