Jerantut (GPS: 3.9355, 102.35755) is a small town in central Pahang. It is also the administrative centre for the Jerantut district, which covers 7561 sq km and has a population of around 100,000 (2011 estimate).

The Jerantut district is the biggest district in Pahang. It is bordered by Kelantan to the north, Terengganu to the northeast, Paya Besar district to the east, Maran district to the southeast, Kuala Krau district to the south, Raub district to the southwest and Lipis district to the west.

Much of the Jerantut district is forested and designated as part of the Taman Negara National Park. The town of Jerantut itself is a gateway into the national park.

Jerantut district comprises 10 subdistricts or mukim. The biggest of these is the mukim of Hulu Tembeling. The other mukims (in alphabetical order) include Burau, Hulu Cheka, Kelola, Kuala Tembeling, Pedah, Pulau Tawar, Tebing Tinggi, Teh and Tembeling.

About 25 km to the east of Jerantut town is the archeological site of Kota Gelanggi. The site is believed to be one of the ancient capitals of the Srivijaya Empire, one of the oldest pre-Islamic civilizations on the Malay Peninsula, which appeared between AD 650 to AD 900.

Visiting Jerantut

If you are driving to Jerantut, take the East Coast Highway (E8) from Kuala Lumpur and exit the highway near Temerloh then head north on Route 98 until you arrive in Jerantut. Look out for signages for Jerantut. Alternatively, take the expresses buses from Kuala Lumpur, sparing yourself the trouble of driving the long distance.
