The Majestic Malacca (GPS: 2.20204, 102.25213) is a luxury hotel in Malacca. It is located on Jalan Bunga Raya, by the banks of the Malacca River, across from Kampung Morten. The hotel occupies the two-storey mansion that was built by local tycoon Leong Long Man. The main building today houses the Front Office and the restaurant Melba At The Mansion. Behind the main building is a modern ten-storey block that houses the guest rooms.

About The Majestic Malacca

The original building of The Majestic Malacca was built by local tycoon Leong Long Man in 1929. According to the hotel's resident tour guide, the main door was for his exclusive use and that of his main wife. Leong Long Man has a few minor wives as well, who had to enter the mansion through a side door.

Just two years after occupying the mansion, Leong Long Man was stricken with cholera. To prevent the disease from spreading to the rest of his family, he built an annex behind the main house where he resided. Leong Long Man placed his trust on traditional Chinese medicine. Unfortunately, it failed to cure him, and he soon passed away.

With his passing, his entire estate came into the hands of his son, who squandered his inheritance, and was eventually forced to sell off the mansion to pay his debts. The property was purchased by a Singapore businessman, Lim Heng Fang, who established the original Majestic Hotel there. During the mid 1950s, The Majestic Hotel was the favourite watering hole for British planters and well-heeled guests visiting Malacca. It even hosted Tunku Abdul Rahman, who was then the Chief Minister of the Federation of Malaya, when he arrived in Malacca to announce Malaya's independence.

As the decades rolled by, The Majestic Hotel became aged and by the turn of the 21st century, had become a mere shadow of its former self. The hotel finally closed on 31 July, 2000, and for a while, it look like the building might be demolished. But a public outcry managed to save it. Then in 2006, YTL Hotels stepped in to acquire the property and breathe new life into it. What followed was a no-expense-spared restoration of the original building, and the construction of the guest room block. The newly revived Majestic Malacca finally opened to guests in January 2008. It was officially opened by the Yang Di-Pertua Negeri Melaka, Tun Datuk Seri Utama Mohd Khalil Bin Yaakob, on 11 January, 2008.

Accommodation at The Majestic Malacca

The Majestic Malacca offers just three types of rooms: the Deluxe Room, the Majestic Suite and the Tranquerah Suite. The Deluxe Rooms are 35 square meters in size, while the suites are twice that size. All the rooms are luxuriously furnished.

Dining at The Majestic Malacca

The Majestic Malacca offers three food & beverage outlets. The main restaurant, located on the upper floor of the original building, is Melba At The Mansion, helmed by Malacca Eurasian Celebrity Chef Melba Nunis. Open for breakfast from 7:00am to 10:00am, and dinner from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, it offers guests a glimpse at Kristang cuisine that is unique to Malacca.

On the ground floor is The Lounge At The Mansion, which serves afternoon teas with various local kuihs and other refreshments. It's a good place to meet up for a chitchat. The Lounge is open daily from 12:00pm noon, and afternoon tea is available from 3:00pm to 6:00pm.

The Bar At The Mansion, is a throw back to the saloons of yesteryears. It is a place for guests to unwind over a drink or two. It is open daily from 12:00pm noon to 12:00am midnight.

Facilities at The Majestic Malacca

The Majestic Malacca has a spacious car park for outstation guests. There is a swimming pool and a gym. Both of these are open 24 hours a day. The hotel also has an inhouse spa, called The Spa Village, where guests can enjoy traditional massages with elements from the Peranakan culture.
