Wisma Ekran, Kuala Lumpur (8 July, 2016)


Wisma Ekran (GPS: 3.15038, 101.69171) is a historic building in Kuala Lumpur. It is located at the junction of Jalan Tangsi and Jalan Parlimen. Designed in the 1930s in the then fashionable Art Deco style by British architect Arthur Oakley Coltman, the building, which was originally known as the Anglo-Oriental Building, forms a graceful curve facing the junction, with façades towards Jalan Tangsi and Jalan Parlimen. It belonged to the Anglo-Oriental (Malaya) Ltd., which is a subsidiary of Anglo-Oriental Mining Corporation, later known as London Tin Corporation Limited. It got its present name in 1995, when it was acquired by Ekran Berhad. Nevertheless, the company has since sold off the building in 2005, and at time of writing (November 2016), it remained vacant.

Completed in 1937, Wisma Ekran has an appearance that is similar to that of the Oriental Building, which was also designed by Coltman. Other structures in Kuala Lumpur designed by Coltman include the the the Lee Rubber Building (early 1930s), the Market Square Clock Tower (1937), OCBC Building (1937), Lee Rubber Building, the old Odean Cinema (1936), and the Rubber Research Institute of Malaya Building (1936).
