Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur (11 July, 2016)


Sungai Besi (GPS: 3.05744, 101.71786) is a township on the southern part of Kuala Lumpur. The area that is Sungai Besi sprawls across what is present-day Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, to include townships such as Seri Kembangan. The Mines Wellness City is also part of Sungai Besi, though it is today within Seri Kembangan in Selangor.

Sungai Besi, which means "river of iron", began as a mining town. At one point, it had the deepest tin mine in the country. Sungai Besi is also home to Kuala Lumpur's first airbase. The Sungai Besi Airfield, now known as the Sungai Besi Airport, was Kuala Lumpur's main airport before the construction of Subang Airport or KLIA.

Sungai Besi is the site of the planned urban development, Bandar Malaysia, which will occupy the site of the Old Sungai Besi Airport. The airport is now far north of the area that is Sungai Besi.

With the urban expansion of Kuala Lumpur, many of the present neighbourhoods such as Bandar Tun Razak and Salak Selatan are carved out of former Sungai Besi, shrinking the actual area of present Sungei Besi to the southernmost borders of Kuala Lumpur. It is contiguous with Sungai Besi in Selangor, which is the location of Mines, site of what was once the deepest tin mine in the country.That mine is now filled with water, and is a man-made lake.
