Experiencing Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur

My wife and I had the pleasure of experiencing the hospitality of Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur on 11-13 August, 2019. It was the 7th and final hotel we stayed at on a two-week journey through Peninsular Malaysia.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we proceeded to park our car at Basement 1, and took the lift to the ground floor. To enter the hotel, we have to exit the lobby and go through security clearance. As with Rasa Sayang Resort in Penang, all guests have to pass through security clearance to enter the lobby. This provides guest a sense of security within the grounds.

Shangri-La Hotel Kuala Lumpur has a huge lobby area. At the centre is circular water cascade with a curling column at the heart of it. Wrapped around one side of the cascade is a grand staircase. To one side is the high-ceiling lobby lounge, and next to that, the main dining outlet of the hotel, Lemon Garden. There are many cosy corners, with sofas and couches.

Among the decorations at the lobby is this huge bouquet of Red Ruby Mokara Orchid. It comprises 700 stalks, with 3 bundles of Bird Nest leaves, 10 bundles of Ruscu leaves, and 10 stalks of Monstera leaves, all set in an elegant black glass vase.

Elsewhere, and all over the hotel, are these pots of live purple phalaenopsis orchids.

From the lobby, we could see various gardens within the hotel's compound. There is a vast green labyrinth hedge right outside. It is meticulously well kept.

We proceeded to the front desk to check in. When the receptionist saw our booking, she immediately ushered us upstairs to the Horizon Club, on the first floor, which is where Golden Circle club members check in. Apparently, privileged guests check in there. This reminded me of the time I checked in to Golden Sands Resort, another Shangri-La property.

During our stay, we were provided the Executive Room, which offers a splendid view of the intersection between Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan P. Ramlee.

After checking in, we went to survey the hotel. Back to the lobby, we went through a door that leads to the garden with a koi pond in the centre. From there, we could see KL Tower looming over us.

After a short rest, it was time to enjoy some pampering at the spa. The Spa at Shangri-La Hotel is located on Level 4, the same floor as the gym and the swimming pool. We were given one hour of couple's massage.

After the massage, my wife retired to the room to relax, while I went for a walk, so that I can update the photos for my website. Upon coming back to the hotel, it was time to get ready for dinner.

Dinner on our first evening was at Shang Palace, the Chinese restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel. Asked what we would like to order, I told the Head Waiter to bring to us anything that is representative of the restaurant, so that we can showcase it to our readers.

What was chosen for us was a 6-course dinner. It began with Double-boiled Chrysanthemum Tofu Soup with Dried Scallop and Morel Mushroom. Next was Deep-fried Prawns with Nutmeg Mayonnaise and Crispy Potato. Then, we had Sautéed Beef Tenderloin with Shimeji Mushroom and Shallot in the Chef's Signature Sauce. The 4th course was Stir-fried Lotus Root and Assorted Vegetables with Macadamia Nuts. Then came Wok-fried Red and White Rice with Seafood and Sakura Prawns. And for dessert, we had Chilled Lemon Grass Jelly with Lime Sorbet. I have to say that this has got to be the best Chinese cuisine meal I have had for this year!

I am blown away by the creativity of the chefs at Shang Palace. Just take a look at this. It is really tofu, so soft it would break apart in a touch. And yet the chefs at Shang Palace have managed to slice it until it opens up in the soup to form a Chrysanthemum flower.

Our lunch on our second day at Shangri-La Hotel was at Zipangu, perhaps one of the finest Japanese restaurants in downtown Kuala Lumpur. We were seated in a private dining area, away from the rest of the guests, so that we can have more privacy to photograph the food.

Zipangu is possibly one of the most "Japanese" Japanese restaurant that I have ever dined in. It has various features that makes it so distinctly elegant. In the private dining area is a water feature, where the water emerges from a granite slab and flows over the top, and to the side. On the exterior of the restaurant, there is a water cascade over a granite wall, with another block of granite on the ground. It was abstract art in a most Zen sense.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
