Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (6 August, 2017)


Cheras (GPS: 3.10684, 101.72591) is a suburb of Kuala Lumpur. It is located to the southeast of the city centre, and stretches across the border into Cheras, Selangor. Cheras borders Ampang to the north and Kajang to the south. It is within the Kajang and Hulu Semenyih district. In Selangor, Cheras is within the Hulu Langat District. The neighbourhood is densely populated.

Today Cheras is one of the biggest suburbs of Kuala Lumpur. There are many large housing estates here including Bandar Tun Razak, Taman Connaught, Taman Maluri and Taman Midah. Major roads serving Cheras includes the Middle Ring Road 2 (Route 28), the Cheras-Kajang Expressway (E7), SILK Highway (E18) and Jalan Cheras.

According to The Star¹, Cheras traces its beginnings to 1876. The name Cheras is said to have been the corruption of the Malay word teras which means core. It is said that labourers building the Sungai Langat Bridge at Kampung Balakong had stumbled upon a tree which was difficult to cut because of its wood. A different version of the story said that a big tree was found sunken in a stream which was called Sungai Teras, from where the name eventually morphed to Cheras. Yet another theory is that the name came from a Chinese (Cantonese?) word chow lai, meaning to go back and forth.

When the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur was created on 1 February, 1974, Cheras was split into two parts, one in Selangor and another in Kuala Lumpur.

How to get to Cheras

By LRT
Take the RapidKL Ampang Line to the Cheras LRT Station (SP20). The station is on the Kuala Lumpur side of Cheras. When the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT Line is operational, Cheras will be served by the Cochrane, Maluri, Taman Pertama, Taman Midah, Taman Mutiara and Taman Connaught MRT stations, in addition to the MRT Station on the Selangor Cheras.
