Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

Bangsar (GPS: 3.12901, 101.67978) is an affluent residential neighbourhood to the southwest of Kuala Lumpur. It is located roughly 4km from the city centre. Bangsar falls under the administration of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur) and is noted for its cafes, eateries, shopping and nightlife.

Bangsar is located to the south of Damansara, and north of Pantai Dalam. It is bounded by Jalan Bangsar and Jalan Pantai Baharu to the south, Universiti Malaya to the west, Jalan Damansara, along with the Sprint Expressway and Bukit Damansara to the north, and Bukit Persekutuan to the east. The townships and housing estates within Bangsar include Bangsar Utama, Bukit Bangsar, Bangsar Park, Bukit Bandaraya, Taman SA, Bangsar Baru, Lucky Garden, Pantai Hills, among others.

Shopping in Bangsar

The two main shopping malls in Bangsar are Bangsar Shopping Centre near Damansara, and Bangsar Village (I & II) at Bangsar Baru. Bangsar Shopping Centre has Cold Storage supermarket as an anchor tenant.

A brief history of Bangsar

Bangsar was formerly a rubber plantation from the turn of the 20th century until the 1960's. Kuala Lumpur Rubber and Bangsar Estate were the owners of rubber plantations here. In fact, the very name "Bangsar" is derived from Bungsar, the name of Bungsar Estate which is located there. The name Bungsar (pronounced "bangsar") in turn is a portmanteau of Bunge and Grisar, the surname of the two men who established the Bungsar Estate - Edouard Bunge and Alfred Grisar.

In the 1950's the rubber plantations begin to make way for development. Several companies had their staff quarters here, including Malayan Railway and the National Electricity Board.

Getting there

Take the Kelana Jaya Line to the Bangsar LRT Station. On the south side of Bangsar is the Kerinchi LRT Station (KJ18). If driving, you can use the New Pantai Expressway (E10), the Sprint Expressway (E23), the Damansara-Puchong Expressway aka LDP (E11) or the Kerinchi Link.

Food and Beverage

If there's something Bangsar has aplenty, it would be cafes, bars and restaurants. Many of the residential houses, especially among the main road, Jalan Maarof, have been converted into shops and food outlets.
