History of Ampang

Ampang is believed to be the initial site in Kuala Lumpur where tin was first mined. This happened in the late 1850's, when a group of Chinese labourers from Lukut were employed by Raja Abdullah and Raja Jumaat. They arrived by boat, disembarking by the bank of the Klang River near its confluence with the Gombak River. From there, they trekked to Ampang, where tin ore was in abundance.

The very name "Ampang" points to the township's mining past. It is synonymous with empangan, the Malay word for dam, and refers to a time when rivers (most likely the Klang River) was dammed for mining purposes.

Getting there

By LRT
The Ampang LRT station is the terminus for the RapidKL Ampang Line.

By Road
Take Jalan Ampang or the Kuala Lumpur-Ampang Elevated Highway.

Staying in Ampang

There are condominiums and apartments in Ampang. As this is a place where diplomats stay, expect the rental to be quite high - RM4000 for a one or two bedroom apartment, to RM9,000 for a large 3-bedroom unit. The apartments in Ampang tend to be quite large with low density, but not of the latest design.

Schools

The International School of Kuala Lumpur has its elementary school at Taman Melawati while its middle school and high school are at Ampang Jaya. Mutiara International Grammar School, located next to the International School of Kuala Lumpur high school, offers lessons that follow the British curriculum. Another two international schools offering the British curriculum are Fairview and Sayfol international schools.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
