Kota Bharu Cenotaph (29 April, 2017)


The Kota Bharu Cenotaph (GPS: 6.13123, 102.23646) is a World War I monument erected by the British. It is located located at Merdeka Square.

The Cenotaph was a memorial to those who went from Kelantan to fight in World War I, also known then as the Great War (1914-1918), giving their lives as a result. Their names are engraved on a plaque on the memorial. It was here that the corpse of a local rebel, Tok Janggut Pahlawan Kelantan, was hung upside down in 1915.

A second, smaller plaque was added to remember those from Kelantan who lost their lives in the Second World War (1939-1945).

The Cenotaph was the site of the declaration of independence from the British on 31 August, 1957.
