Kota Kuala Muda Medieval Gate

Kota Kuala Muda Medieval GateKota Kuala Muda Medieval Gate (11 March, 2008)

Kota Kuala Muda Medieval Gate (GPS: 5.58507, 100.37469) is the remnant of a medieval fort that once encircled the trading post of Kota Kuala Muda. Indeed the name of the town refers to the fortification itself. The settlement was built to protect trade flowing down the Muda River, the the fortification itself is the tangible relic of that past.

Much of the early fortification, which had been built and rebuilt by different sultans, had since been demolished - or pulled down by adversaries, such as had happened in the power tussle for the thrown. Such a thing did take place in 1821, when Tengku Yaakob, the younger brother to the sultan, captured Kota Kuala Muda, with help from Siamese troops. Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin attempted a few times to eject him from the trading port, and when unsuccessful, had to move his seat of government to a new site, providing for the founding of Alor Setar (within then an area called Kota Setar, now the district) as his new seat of administration.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
