Kluang (GPS: 2.02929, 103.3168; Traditional Chinese: 居鑾; Simplified Chinese: 居銮; Jawi: كلواڠ) is a town in central Johor. It is located within the Kluang District. Sungai Mengkibol flows right through the town. Although it gives its name to Kluang District, Kluang is not the administrative seat. That honour goes to Simpang Renggam. The district has a population of a quarter million people, of which about 60% live in Kluang town. The town is very much surrounded by undulating plantation land. Oil palm and rubber are the main commodity crops here.

Where to stay in Kluang

On my recent visit to Kluang, my wife and I stayed at the Rail Hotel, a budget hotel at Pusat Perniagaan Tasik in Kluang. We were there to join a food tour of Kluang organized by Singapore cookbook author, Evonne Lyn Lee. Ms Lee often organizes food tours to various parts of Malaysia. If you are interested to know about her future food tours, please submit this form.

During the food tour of Kluang, I had the pleasure to meeting up my good friend, Catherina Hosoi, who is also another cookbook author in Singapore.

What to see in Kluang

Kluang isn't so much a place with sightseeing spots, as it is more a place with good food. Having said that, I will list down the sights in Kluang which I have visited in the map below. One place worth checking out is the Street Art Alley, which has attracted tourist interest since it was created in 2016.

History of Kluang

The history of Kluang goes back to 1910, when a decision was made to develop Central Johor for agriculture. The site of Kluang was selected and in 1915, it was made the administrative capital of central Johor. A railway station was built there, and this helped to spur the grown of the town and region.

Kluang is said to have been named after a village called Kampung Kluang, which in turn was named after the fruit bat, keluang. The fruit bat has all but disappeared in the Kluang area.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
