Yokote 横手市, Akita Prefecture

Yokote (Japanese: 横手市) is a city on the southeastern part of Akita Prefecture, in the Tohoku region in northern Honshu, Japan. It covers 693 sq km (267 sq mi) and has a population of 97,000 people (2012 estimate). It was created in 1951 and was expanded in 2005 with in annexed the towns of Hiraka, Jumonji, Masuda, Omonogawa, Omori and the villages of Sannai and Taiyu.

Perhaps the best time to visit Yokote is during the Kamakura Festival, held in mid winter. That's when you can see igloo-like abodes made of snow and ice lit from within. During the festival, a local specialities enjoyed is amazake, a fermented rice beverage which can be alcoholic as well as non alcoholic. Another speciality is the Japanese rice cake, called mochi, made from glutinous rice.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
