Yawatahama 八幡浜市, Ehime Prefecture

Yawatahama (Japanese: 八幡浜市) is a city on the southwestern part of Ehime Prefecture, in Shikoku, Japan. The city's present boundaries dates to 2005, when it annexed the town of Honai, giving it an area of 133 sq km (51 sq mi) and a population of 38,000 people (2012 estimate).

Yawatahama is located at the head of the Sadamisaki Peninsula, the longest peninsula in Japan. The area here is hilly, with only a small portion of flat land.

Yawatahama is today a mainly farming town. It has the biggest fish market in Shikoku. The town is also a major producer of mikan, or tangerine.

Perhaps the most important shrine in Yawatahama is the Hachiman Shrine. This shrine dates from the founding of Yawatahama. According to legend, it was established after debris from a festival at the original Hachiman Shrine in Usa, Oita Prefecture, floated across the sea to the beach at Yawatahama. The Hachiman Shrine of Usa, also called the Usa Shrine, is the main Hachiman Shrine in Japan. Hachiman shrines are dedicated to the Japanese syncretic god of archery and war.
