Towada 十和田市, Aomori Prefecture

Towada (Japanese: 十和田市) is a city in south-central Aomori Prefecture, in northern Honshu, Japan. It covers 726 sq km (280 sq mi) and has a population of 65,000 people (2012 estimate).

The city of Towada is located at the foothills of the Hakkoda Mountains. It experiences a cold maritime climate. Summers here are cool while winters are often very cold. The area was a wasteland called Sanbongihara during the feudal period of Japanese history. Land reclamation was initiated here in 1855 by the Nambu clan and was continued during the Meiji Restoration. The town of Sanbongi was formed in 1910. It was given city status in 1955 and renamed Towada in 1956. It merged with the neighboring town of Towadako in 2005.

Planning your trip to Towada

You can go to Towada by road taking Japan National Routes 4, 45, 102, 103 and 394. By train, take the Towada Kanko Electric Railway Line which makes stops at Towadashi, Higashino-Danchi, Kogyokokomae, Kitasato Daigakumae and Takashizu stations.
