Akishima City (昭島市), Tokyo

Akishima (Japanese: 昭島市) is a city on the central part of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. It covers 17.33 sq km (6.69 sq mi) and has a population of 113,000 people (2012 estimate).

Akishima was formed frompart of Musashi Province. It was made part of Kitatama District of Kanagawa Prefecture following the Meiji Restoration in 1878. The district was transferred to Tokyo Metropolis on 1 April, 1893.

On 1 January, 1928, the villages of Nakagami and Sotoyatsu were meged to form Shōwa Village. Shōwa was given town status on 1 January 1941. On 1 May, 1954, it merged with the village of Haiji to become the city of Akishima.

Today Akishima is an industrial suburb. It is home to plants for Hoya Corporation, Shōwa Aircraft Industry and Japan Aviation Electronics. It is also a commuter town for people working within the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Going to Akishima

Akishima is served by the JR East Ōme Line (Stations: Nichi Tachikawa, Higashi Nakagami, Nakagami, Akishima and Haijima), JR East Hachikō Line (Haijima Station) and JR East Itsukaichi Line (Haijima Station). You can also reach it by take the Japan National Route 16.
