Akiruno City (あきる野市), Tokyo

Akiruno (Japanese: あきる野市) is a city on the central western part of Tokyo Metropolis, Japan. It covers 73.34 sq km (28.32 sq mi) and has a population of 81,000 people (2012 estimate).

Present-day Akiruno was part of the province of Musashi. With the Meiji Restoration in 1878, the area was transferred to Nishitama District, which was then within Kanagawa Prefecture. The city traces its history to the founding of the town of Itsukaichi on 1 April, 1889. Over the century it expanded, absorbing neighboring villages such as Higashiakiru and Nishiakiru.

On 1 April, 1955, the town of Akigawa was formed. It was given city status on 5 May, 1971. Then on 1 September, 1995, the city of Akigawa was merged with the town of Itsukaichi, to create the city of Akiruno.

Getting there

Akiruno is served by the JR East-Itsukaichi Line, with stops at Higashi Akiru Station, Akigawa Station, Musashi Hikida Station, Musashi Masuko Station and Musashi Itsukaichi Station. If coming by road, take either the Ken-Ō Expressway or Route 411.
