Sukagawa (ща須賀川市, Fukushima Prefecture

Sukagawa (Japanese: 須賀川市) is a city in the central part of Fukushima Prefecture, in the Tohoku Region of northern Honshu, Japan. It covers 280 sq km (108 sq mi) and has a population of 79,000 people (2012 estimate). The city is perhaps best known for its peony garden and its torch festival.

The history of Sukagawa goes back to the Edo period, when it prospered as a crossroad of the Edo Five Routes. This came to past with the Meiji Restoration, when it was eclipsed by Koriyama, which developed as a junction of the West Ban-etsu Line.

Part of Sukugawa was destroyed following the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and nuclear disaster. This was partly due to the failure of the Fujinuma Dam which overtopped its full reservoir, washing away five houses and damaging others. At least eight people lost their lives in the incident.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
