Sakai 坂井市, Fukui Prefecture

Sakai (Japanese: 坂井市) is a city on the northern part of Fukui Prefecture, Japan. Located immediately north of the prefecture capital, Fukui City, it covers 210 sq km (81 sq mi) and has a population of 94,000 people (2012 estimate). It is also the second biggest city in the prefecture.

The present city limits of Sakai dates to 2006, when the former Sakai merged with the towns of Harue, Maruoka and Mikuni. The city serves as a commuter town for those working in Fukui City.

Planning your trip to Sakai

You can reach Sakai by taking the Hokuriku Main Line, which stops at the Harue and Maruoka stations. The Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara Line makes stops at Taromaru, Nishi-Harue, Nishinagata, Shimohyogo, Ozeki, Mizui, Mikuni-Jinja, Mikuni and Mikuni-ko stations.

If traveling to Sakai by car, you can take the Hokuriku Expressway (to the Maruoka interchange) or Japan National Highways 8, 305 and 364.
