Mie Prefecture (三重県)

Mie Prefecture (三重県) is a prefecture in the Kansai Region of Honshu Island, Japan. It is located on the east coast facing the Pacific Ocean. Mie Prefecture covers 5,777 sq km and ranks 25th in terms of size. It borders Aichi Prefecture to the northeast, Gifu Prefecture to the north, Shiga Prefecture to the the north west, Kyoto Prefecture and Nara Prefecture to the west and Wakayama Prefecture to the south.

Mie Prefecture has a population of 1.9 million (2011 estimate), and is the 23rd most populous prefecture. Its capital is Tsu City. Mie Prefecture is the site of the Ise Shrine, the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan. The shrine is believed to have been established in the Yayoi period between 300 BC and 300 AD.

Tsu, the capital of Mie Prefecture, can be reached by train from Nagoya. Take the Kintetsu Nagoya Line. The train to the Tsu Eki railway station costs ¥980.
