The founding of Kurume dates to 1889, when the initial village was founded. This grew into a substantial town. It was granted city status in 2005 when the towns of Kitano, Jojima, Mizuma and Tanushimaru merged to form the present city of Kurume.

Kurume is noted for its indigo dyed cloth called kasuri. The local culinary specialties include pork soup ramen noodle called tonkotsu. The city also produces lacquerware such as bowls and trays.

Planning your trip to Kurume

Take the Fukuoka Expressway Route 2 heading south, continuing with the Kyushu Expressway Toll Road until Exit 10, then continue on Route 322 heading west to enter Kurume.
