Hamamatsu 浜松市, Shizuoka Prefecture

Hamamatsu (Japanese: 浜松市) is a city on the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan. It covers 1,511.17 sq km (583.47 sq mi) and has a population of 813,000 people (2012 estimate).

Human habitation in Hamamatsu goes back to prehistoric times, with discovery of artifacts from the Jomon and Kofun periods. It developed as a castle town around Hamamatsu Castle, which was probably built in the 16th century. Hamamatsu was granted city status on 1 July, 1911.

Planning your trip to Hamamatsu

Hamamatsu is on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line and the JR Tokaido Line. It receives trains from Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. The Kodama service from Tokyo takes 2 hours to reach Hamamatsu while the Hikari takes 90 minutes. Both services cost ¥8,070 for a reserved seat.
