Fukui Prefecture 福井県

Fukui Prefecture (Japanese: 福井県) is a prefecture in the Chubu Region of Honshu in central Japan. The prefecture faces the Sea of Japan and has its capital at Fukui City. It was formed in 1871 with the merger of Wakasa Province and Echizen Province. It is within the Hokuriku sub-region of Chubu, which includes Ishikawa Prefecture, Toyama Prefecture and Niigata Prefecture.

Fukui Prefecture borders Ishikawa Prefecture to the north, Gifu Prefecture to the east, Shiga Prefecture to the southeast and Hyogo Prefecture to the south. It is 4,188 sq km, ranking it in 34th position out of the 47 prefectures. Fukui Prefecture has a population of 830,000 (2011 estimate), putting it in the 43rd position in terms of population.
