Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv (Hebrew: תל אביב; Arabic: تل أبيب‎‎) is the second most populous city in Israel. It covers 51.4 sq km (19.8 sq mi), and is within the Gush Dan Metropolitan Area, which has 3.3 million inhabitants. The city is in the Israeli Standard Time, which is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+2) and three hours ahead during Daylight Saving Time in summer. Tel Aviv, which means "spring mound", has a short modern history, by Middle East standards, established only in 1909. Originally a suburb of Jaffa, the city has since outpaced Jaffa, eventually absorbing it in 1950.

Tel Aviv is today the economic heart of Israel. It is the financial capital of the country as well as its cultural and business center. The city is on the Israeli Mediterranean coast, immediately to the north of the ancient port city of Jaffa. It is 60 km (37 mi) to the northwest of Jerusalem and 90 km south of Haifa.

Tel Aviv experiences a Mediterranean climate. Its summers are hot, with temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F) in summer. Coldest months are January and February, when the average temperature may drop to less than 10°C (50°F). December and January are the wettest months, with 126 mm (4.9 in) of precipitation each. June to August are hot and dry, with hardly any rain.

Tel Aviv has the largest collection of buildings in the International Modern style, otherwise known as Bauhaus. Designed by immigrant architects trained in Europe particularly Germany, the Bauhaus-style structures were built between the 1930's and the 1940's. In 2003, this Bauhaus legacy received UNESCO recognition when the "White City" was declared a World Heritage Site.

Visiting Tel Aviv

The Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) is the airport located 15 km (9 mi) southeast of Tel Aviv. It is the largest and busiest international airport in Israel. The airport has three terminals of which Terminal 3 is used mostly for international flights. Arriving visitors can take the train to downtown Tel Aviv. The station is located at the lower level of Terminal 3. The fare to Tel Aviv is 12 NIS, available from the cashier or the vending machine. Taxis are expensive, making the same journey for 120 NIS.
