Gujarat is a state on the western part of India. It is the traditional homeland of the Gujarati people. The state faces the Arabian Sea top the southwest, and has a coastline stretching 1,600 km. It is bordered by Pakistan to the northwest, and the states of Rajastan to the northeast, Madhya Pradesh to the east and Maharashtra, and the Union Territories of Diu, Daman and Nagar Haveli to the south.

Gujarat covers 196,077 sq km (75,686 sq mi). It has a population of 51 million (2011 estimate), making it the 10th most populous state in India. The state capital is at Gandhinagar while the biggest city is Ahmedabad.

Gujarat encompasses the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the earliest known civilizations, with ancient cities such as Lothal, Dholavira and Gola Dhoro. Within the Indus Valley Civilization are some of the biggest archaeological sites in India.

Ahmedabad is the main gateway to Gujarat. Its Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD), located 15 km to the northeast of the city center, is the 8th largest airport in India.

The Star reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Sardar Sarovar Dam, which is the biggest dam in India. The dam will span the Narmada River and provide power to three states. The dam was inaugurated despite opposition from environmental groups claiming that hundreds of thousands of people would lose their livelihoods because of it.
