Nanchang (南昌) is the capital and biggest city in Jiangxi Province, China. It is a prefecture-level city covering 7,402 sq km (2,857 sq mi). Nanchang has a population of 4.85 million people (2011 estimate). It is located in the northern part of Jiangxi Province, and is subdivided into 6 districts and 4 counties.

Nanchang observes the China Standard Time, which is eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+8). It is situated by the right bank of the Gan River, 40 km before it empties into Poyang Lake. The city experiences a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate. The warmest months are July and August, when the average high temperature reaches 33°C (91.4°F) and sometimes more. The coldest month is January, when it drops to 2.7°C (36.9°F).

Nanchang traces its history to 201 BC, when it was first established as a walled settlement. It became the provincial center of Jiangxi in AD 763. By the 12th century, Jiangxi Province had become the most populous province in China.

Nanchang was one of the cities that was affected by the Taiping Rebellion of 1850-64. This caused it to decline in importance, but remained the capital of Jiangxi Province. Today Nanchang a regional agricultural hub producing vast quantities of rice and oranges. It also has an industrial base producing, among others, aircraft parts, automobile, textile, chemical and traditional Chinese medicine.

You can fly to the Nanchang Changbei International Airport (KHN), which receives flights from major cities in China along with Seoul.

Exploring Nanchang

Unless you are well acquainted with the bus network, the taxi will be your choice of transport. As in most second-tier cities of China, the taxi fare in Nanchang is not expensive. Fare starts at ¥6 for the first 2 km, with additional ¥1.90 for every subsequent kilometer.
