Causeway Bay 銅鑼灣 is an area on the northern part of Hong Kong Island covering parts of Wan Chai District and Eastern District. This heavily built-up area is the main shopping districts of Hong Kong, comparable to Sloane Street in London and Fifth Avenue in New York City. It also has one of the most expensive land in Hong Kong.
As its name suggests, Causeway Bay was once a proper bay, albeit a silted one. Successive land reclamation has changed the appearance of the area, extending the shoreline outwards. The shore was originally at Tung Lo Wan Road, which followed the curve of the bay. There was a causeway at the mouth of that bay. Causeway Road traces the route of that early causeway.
As recently as 1950, the shoreline was at Causeway Road. It was pushed outward during the 1950 reclamation, which created Victoria Park. An offshore island, Kellett Island, was totally removed from the map when reclamation made it part of Hong Kong Island.

Another place that has been absorbed by Causeway Bay is East Point. This is the area around the Causeway Bay MTR Station. A short street in the area, East Point Road, follows the original coastline as it jutted out into the sea. With these land reclamations, the area regarded as Causeway Bay has expanded and today reaches as far west as Canal Road.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
