Dongguan (东莞) is a prefecture-level city in Guangdong Province, in southern China. It is located just 47 kilometers from Hong Kong, 48 kilometers from Macau, 50 kilometers from Guangzhou and 90 kilometers from Shenzhen. It is one of the fastest growing cities in China. As of end 2008, the Dongguan metropolitan area has a population of close to 7 million people, many of which are immigrants from other parts of China.

An important industrial city on the Pearl River Delta, Dongguan is the fourth biggest exporting city in China, with an annual shipment of $65 billion, behind only Shenzhen, Shanghai and Suzhou.

The area where Dongguan is located has seen human habitation going back 5,000 years. During more recent history, Dongguan is remembered as the site for the incineration of opium.

Today Dongguan is best known as the location city for South China Mall, presently the biggest shopping mall in the world.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
