Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is a sight at the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. This picture-postcard mosque is the icon and landmark of Bandar Seri Begawan.

Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque was built in 1958 by its namesake, the 28th ruler of Brunei and father of the present sultan. Its minaret stands at 44 meter is the tallest structure in Bandar Seri Begawan, and presently no other structure in the city is allowed to exceed it in height.

The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque appears to be floating in its own man-made lagoon beside the Kedayan River. The interior of the mosque is simple and tastefully finished, using fine Italian marble, Arabian carpets, English stained-glass windows, and 3.5 million pieces of Venetian mosaic on the main dome. Outside, there is a stone vessal, a replica of a 16th century royal barge.

The external compound of the mosque is open to non-Muslims from 8:00 am until 8:30 pm, and non-Muslims are permitted entry into the mosque itself outside of prayer times, if they are appropriately dressed. One can also take an elevator to the top of the minaret for a breathtaking view, particularly of Kampung Ayer below.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
