Sylhet is a city of about half a million people in northeastern Bangladesh. It is the main city of the division and district of the same name. The city of Sylhet is located on the banks of the Surma River and is surrounded by a few hills, among them Jaintia, Khasi and Tripura.

Sylhet is a fast developing city in Bangladesh. It derives its prosperity traditionally from its tea gardens, but has lately experience a booming economy which translates into the construction of new hotels, malls and housing estates. The economy of the city is propped up in part by remittances from Sylhetis living abroad, chiefly in the United Kingdom. Sylhet is one of the few cities in Bangladesh where you can feel a definite construction boom, giving it a newer look than most cities of the country.

Climate of Sylhet

The middle part of the year is the warmest time in Sylhet, with the average temperature exceeding 31°C. December and January are the coldest months when the mercury drops to below13 °C at night. The wettest month is June, with rainfall of 32 inches (813 mm) while the driest are from November to February, with less than 1 inch (25 mm) of rain.
