What is Apong
Apong, also called apom balik or Chinese apom, is a sweet Nyonya foldover pancake made from flour and egg and topped with bananas, sweet corn and a sprinkling of sugar. Apong is best eaten when it comes hot from the pan. The Chinese apom is very different from the Indian apom, which is much thinner, or the ban chien koay, which has a harder crust.
Probably the best known Apong seller in Penang is Mr Ung Cheng Guan, whose Apong Guan pushcar has become an iconic figure along Jalan Burma.
Ingredients of Apong:
wheat flour
eggs
pandan leaves, for flavoring
banana slices
sweet corn
white / brown sugar
grated coconut (optional)
