Omaha is a city in Douglas County, Nebraska. It was founded in 1854 along the Missouri River. Its centralized location makes it an ideal city as a national transportation hub. It is home to a handful of Fortune 500 companies, the most famous of which is probably Berkshire Hathaway, owned by Warren Buffett, the world's richest man and resident of Omaha.

Omaha is a medium size city. With a population of just around 440,000, it is ranked as the 40th biggest city in the United States. The city has a number of historic district, heritage trails and parks. There are close to a hundred individual properties in Omaha that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Omaha experiences a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The average temperature in July is 24.8°C (76.7°F) while the average in January is -5.7°C (21.7°F). The wettest months are the warmer ones, while in winter precipitation takes the form of snow.

Travel to Omaha

Omaha is served by the Eppley Airfield Airport (OMA), located just about five minutes from downtown.

You can also take Amtrak trains to Omaha. The California Zephyr runs daily between Emeryville near San Francisco to Chicago.

Greyhound buses have services connecting Omaha with Kansas City, Minneapolis, Denver and Chicago.

Travel within Omaha

The Metro Area Transit bus is the public transport operator in Omaha. The adult regular fare is US$1.25 while the adult express fare is US$1.50. Ten-ride pre-paid cards are also sold at locations throughout Omaha, at US$12.50 for 10 adult rides, US$13.00 for 10 adult rides with transfers, and US$15.00 for 10 adult express rides. Finally, there's the Swipe 'N Ride cards which allows you 30 consecutive days of unlimited rides for US$50 adult regular fare and US$25 half fare. These must be ordered online.

  1. Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts
    Center housed in three separate galleries.

  2. Durham Western Heritage Museum
    Museum housed within a former train station with exhibits on Western heritage. The museum building itself is one of the best examples of Art Deco style in Nebraska.

  3. Gerald R. Ford Birth Site and Gardens
    Gardens where the birthhouse of the late US president once stood.

  4. Joslyn Art Museum
    Museum with art pieces including Renoir, Monet, Degas and El Greco.

  5. Joslyn Castle
    Scottish-Baronial style home of two of Omaha's most respected citizens.

  6. Malcom X Birthsite
    Site where African-American Muslim minister Malcolm X was born.

  7. Mormon Trail Center
    Center chronicling the trail taken by Mormon pioneers in 1846.

  8. Omaha Children's Museum
    Museum with art center, science center and mock grocery store.

  9. Strategic Air and Space Museum
    Museum exhibiting old war planes with changing exhibits on aerospace technology.

  10. Union Pacific Museum
    Museum chronicling the history of the Union Pacific Railroad and its role in the westward expansion of the country.
