New York State is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States. It covers an area of 54,556 sq mi (128,403 sq km). The state measures roughly 330 miles (530 km) across and 285 miles (455 km) from north to south. The highest point is the 5,344-ft (1,629-m) Mount Macy.

New York is bordered by the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec to the north, Vermont to the northeast, Massachusetts to the east, Connecticut to the southeast, and New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south.

New York state, with a population of 19.5 million people, is the third most populated state in the United States. Much of its population is concentrated in and round its biggest city, New York City. The capital of New York state is Albany.

New York became part of the United States on 26 July, 1788. It was the 11th state to join the Union.

Travel to and in New York

By Plane
There are a good number of international airports in and around New York. The big ones are John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and LaGuardia Airport (LGA) both in Queens, and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in neighboring New Jersey. In addition, there are international airports in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany.

By Road
Apart from New York City, the rest of New York City can be conveniently explored by car. There are a good number of interstate highways that criss-cross the state. Among them, I-90 crosses from east to west, linking Rochester, Syracuse and Albany. I-87 begins from the Canadian border, passing through Albany and Poughkeepsie to continue into New Jersey.
