Jackson is the biggest city and capital of the state of Mississippi. It covers 106.8 sq mi (276.7 sq km) and has a population of 175,000 (2011 estimate) with a metropolitan area of 540,000. It is located on the Pearl River, covering Hinds County, Madison County and Rankin County. The majority of the population of Jackson live in Hinds County.

The area where Jackson is located was traditionally inhabited by Native Americans of the Choctaw Nation. The Indians were forced to vacate the land by the US government in the early part of the 19th century. The settlement was named after Andrew Jackson, who later became the 7th President of the United States. At that time he was a general.

Jackson was a center for manufacturing serving the Confederate States of America during the period of the Civil War. Victory of the Union forces in 1863 ousted the Conferates from Jackson. The city suffered artillery bombardment and was eventually burned down by Union forces. Only a few pre-war structures - known as Antebellum architecture - are left standing in Jackson today.

Jackson is today a center for a number of industries including food processing, metal product fabrication and electrical equipment manufacturing.

Jackson experiences a humid subtropical climate. The warmest month here is July, when the average high temperature may touch 91.4°F (33°C). The coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to 35°F (1.67°C). Rainfall is quite evenly spread out throughout the year. The city was hit by a major tornado on 15 April, 2011.

Visiting Jackson, Mississippi

Two interstate highways connect Jackson with the rest of the country. The I-20 runs east-west through the city, connecting it with Birmingham, Alabama, in the east and Dallas in the west. The I-55 connects it with Memphis to the north and New Orleans to the south.
