Great Falls is a city in Cascade County, Montana. It covers only 19.9 sq mi (51.6 sq km) and has a population of just under 60,000 (2011 estimate). It was the largest city in Montana from the 1950's to the 1970's, when it was surpassed by Billings. It was the second biggest city in Montana until 2000, when it slipped to third spot behind Missoula. The Coldwell Banker Home Price Comparison Index places it as the most affordable place to live, among 348 markets in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Great Falls is located at an elevation of 3,330 ft (1,015 m) and has a semi-arid climate. Its summers are hot and dry, with temperatures regularly reaching 90°F (32°C) while its winters are cold and snowy, with the temperature dropping to 0°F (-18°C).

The Great Falls area was traditionally the homeland of Piegan Blackfoot Indians, with the Salish Indians entering it from time to time to hunt for bisons. The first Europeans to pass through it were part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805. The first European to visit the area was explorer and trapper Jim Bridger in 1822.

The city of Great Falls was founded in 1883 by businessman Paris Gibson who visited the area three year earlier. By the turn of the 20th century Great Falls was a thriving township, on its way to become one of the largest cities in Montana. It was a major provider of hydroelectricity, with a number of dams built in the area.
