El Paso is on the northern bank of the Rio Grande river (called the Río Bravo del Norte in Mexico), which forms the international border between the United States and Mexico, with the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez on the opposite bank. It is home to the University of Texas at El Paso and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.

Due to its location in the far west, El Paso is the only major city in Texas to observe the Mountain Time (UTC-7, and in during Daylight Saving Time, UTC-6). It is 3,800 ft (1,140 m) above sea level, with the highest peak in the vicinity being the 7,192 ft (2,192 m) North Franklin Mountain. The 24,000-acre (9,700 ha) Franklin Mountains State Park is located entirely within the city limits of El Paso. It is the largest urban park in the United States.

The city is surrounded by the Chihuahuan Desert. As such it experiences a hot desert climate. Summers are extremely hot and dry while winters are mild and also dry. Precipitation of a whole year totals just 9.43 in (239.5 mm). June is the hottest month, when the average high temperature rises to 95.3°F (35.2°C). January is the coldest month, with average low temperature of 32.9°F (0.5°C).

Despite the harsh climate, the El Paso area has sustained human life for thousands of years. The first European to arrive in the area is believed to be Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate, in 1598 (though unproven, four surviving members of the Narváez Expedition may have passed through the area as early as 1530).

Spanish conquistadors founded El Paso del Norte in what is present-day Ciudad Juárez in 1659. It became the administrative base for the Spanish in New Mexico. During Spanish rule, the part of El Paso which is in present-day Texas was still undeveloped, as the city grew on the south side of the Rio Grande. This was largely due to constant attacks by Indians.

The present city of El Paso began as farmland to the north of the Mexican city of El Paso del Norte. It had a civilian population of Hispanics and Amerindians who farmed the land. In 1824, El Paso became the southernmost locality of the Territorio de Nuevo Mexico, the precursor of today's state of New Mexico, and part of the newly established state of Chihuahua (where present-day Ciudad Juárez is located).

The Texas Revolution of 1836 and the Compromise of 1850 put in place the international boundary between the United States and Mexico, with El Paso on the Texas side. Also established in 1850 was El Paso County. From its humble beginning as the lesser of the two cities on the Rio Grande, El Paso began to grow particularly after the American Civil War.

Today El Paso and Ciudad Juárez has a combined metropolitan population of 1.5 million people, making it the largest bi-national metropolitan area in the world.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
