Santa Ana is the second most populous city in El Salvador. Located on the western part of the country, it covers 408.1 sq km (157.5 sq mi), it has a population of 300,000 people (2011 estimate). The city is at the heart of the Salvadorian coffee planting region, 665 m (2,182 ft) above sea level.

Due to its location, Santa Ana is slightly cooler than cities in lowland El Salvador. Temperatures tend to remain fairly constant throughout the year with March being the hottest month, when average high temperature reaches 31°C (88°F) while December the coldest, when average low temperature drops to 55°F).

The Santa Ana area has been inhabited even before the arrival of the Spaniards. The earliest inhabitants were the Pocomame tribes. They were later displaced by the Pipil tribe around the 13th century. Archaeological excavations have revealed a pre-Columbian settlement called Sihuatehuacán, which in Nahuatl means "place of the priestesses", in the Santa Barbara neighborhood of the city.

Santa Ana was where the 1894 revolt started, that eventually overthrew the dictatorship of Carlos Ezeta. It was the wealthiest city in the country during the late 19th century. The many historic building built during this period attest to the wealth of that period.

Today Santa Ana remains a center for retail and manufacturing in El Salvador. The southern neighborhoods are the most developed and affluent. This is where the upscale shops and malls are located.
