Trinidad is a city in the province of Sancti Spíritus, in the central southern part of Cuba. The city covers 1,155 sq km (445.9 sq mi) and has a population of 74,000 people (2011 estimate).

Trinidad was originally known as Villa de la Santísima Trinidad when it was founded by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar in 1514. The city developed based on the sugarcane plantation. It was the main city for the sugar trade.

Today the sugar trade has declined, and the plantations have been converted to tobacco. Tobacco processing is today the mainstay of Trinidad's economy. As it is one of the best preserved towns in Cuba, it has become an increasingly popular tourist destination. The historic center of the town is also a World Heritage Site.

There are buses from Havana and Santiago de Cuba. You can also get there from Camagüey and Varadero.

Historic Center of Trinidad
Historic neighborhood that is today a World Heritage Site, inscribed along with the Valley de los Ingenios.
Canchánchara
Historic rustic house renowned for creating the namesake cocktail from rum, lime, water and honey.
Casa de la Cultura
Center used as exhibition space by local artists. In the evenings, various performances are held here.
Casa de Rafael Ortiz (Galería de Arte
Historic building from the city's golden age, built in 1808 for its namesake, a former slave trader who went on to become the mayor of Trinidad.
Iglesia Parroquial de la Santísima Trinidad
A sober-looking church with a Neo-Classical façade on the top part of the inclined Plaza Mayor.
Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco
Church established by the Franciscan monks in 1730. It was converted to a parish church in 1848, then turned into an army garrison in 1895. Part of it was demolished in 1930, but what remains today now houses a museum on the struggle against the counter-revolutionaries.
Museo de Arqueología Guamuhaya
Originally buil in the 18th century, it was bought over in the 1800s by Don Antonio Padrón and renovated. Today it showcases artifacts such as pre-Columbian discoveries to items related to slavery, and others.
Museo de Arquitectura Colonial
Formerly the 18th century home of the Sánchez Iznaga family, today it houses the Museum of Colonial Architecture. Originally two houses, these were joined in the 19th century.
Palacio Brunet (Museo Romántico)
Originally built in 1812 as the family residence of the wealthy Borrell family, this mansion today houses a museum that showcases the lavish lifestyle of the 19th century rich.
Palacio Cantero (Museo Histórico Municipal
Mansion originally owned by sugar baron Don Borrell y Padrón, this historical building changed hands among the rich in Trinidad, and today was named after a later owner. Today it houses a museum on the history of Trinidad.
Plaza Mayor
The main square, built on sloping ground and surrounded by the important buildings of Trinidad.
Plazuela del Jigüe
Open space where mass was celebrated in Trinidad for the first time in 1514.

Sights & Attractions outside Trinidad's Historic Center

Cabildo de los Congos Reales de San Antonio
Temple to Afro-Cuban divinities located in a charming working-class neighborhood in northern Trinidad. Worshippers here are followers of the Palo Monte religion.
Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Candelari de la Popa
A small church on top of a hill. It is connected to the Plaza Mayor by a narrow street.
Museo Espeleológico
Cave museum located to the northeast of Trinidad city center. Visitors in the company of a guide can admire the different cave formations inside.
Plaza Santa Ana
Public square on the eastern part of Trinidad, a short distance from Plaza Mayor. It faces the 18th century Iglesia de Santa Ana.
