Pirates of Nassau Museum, Bahamas

[an error occurred while processing this directive] Pirates of Nassau is an interactive museum in Nassau, Bahamas. The museum celebrates the "Golden Age of Piracy" between 1690 and 1720, when Nassau (and for that matter, the entire island of New Providence) was a pirate haven.

From this museum, we learn that pirates go by different "terms". They may be a freebooter, a buccaneer or a privateer. Many engaged in trades for much of the time - but may resort to plundering when the opportunity arises. As as surprising as it may sound, this form of raiding enemy ships is often sponsored or even requested by their government, to keep competiting European powers in check.

Inside the museum are dioramas depicting pirate activity. Some of the dioramas show famous pirates such as Benjamin Hornigold and Woodes Rogers. Interestingly, there were women pirates too, among them Mary Read and Anne Bonney. The early pirates even declared Nassau as a pirate republic and proclaimed themselves as the governors. This was before the British eventually regained control of New Providence island and made Captain Woodes Rogers as the Royal governor in place of the afore shady characters.

Visiting Pirates of Nassau

Visitors on cruise ships arriving in Nassau can book a visit to the Pirates of Nassau at the shore excursion desk. They are then transported by air conditioned bus directly to the door steps of the museum.

The museum is in fact within walking distance of Prince George Wharf, where cruise ships berth. From there, walk along Bay Street until you reach George Street on your left. Go along George Street heading south until intersection with King Street. As you face west, Pirates of Nassau is on the left side of King Street, at the junction with George Street.

The Pirates Museum at Pirates of Nassau is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and on Sundays from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Admission is $12 per adult and $6 per child aged 4-17.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
