Gat Lebuh Acheh

Acheen Street Ghaut is the extension of Acheen Street following land reclamation of the late 19th century.

Late 18th Century
Acheen Street Ghaut does not exist yet. Beach Street was an unpaved road running along the shore. Tengku Syed Hussain, the leader of the Acehnese community, had his four-storey warehouse, Gudang Acheh at the junction of Acheen Street and Beach Street.

Mid 19th Century
Stone steps, or "ghaut", leads down from water's edge, allowing cargo to be offloaded from the ships. Warehouses are located at Beach Street and Acheen Street.

Turn of the 20th Century
Land reclamation (1880-1904) extended shoreline outwards. Stone steps at the end of Acheen Street replaced by a new extended road, called Acheen Street Ghaut, bisected by another new road, Victoria Street, and ends at Weld Quay. Jetties extend from Weld Quay house dock workers grouped by clans.

Getting there

Gat Lebuh Achah can be reached by foot from the Weld Quay Bus Terminal. Cross Pengkalan Weld using the pedestrian crossing, then turn left. Walk along Pengkalan Weld until you arrive at the junction of Gat Lebuh Acheh to your right.
